KnowEm: Check, check, check that name!

People constantly talk about how important a name is to a business. They usually follow that declaration up by emphasizing that a good domain name is just as important. What people often forget is how important it is to register the name of your business on all the major social media sites. Now some of you might be saying, “Whoa, there! I’m not interested in putting in the time to maintain a bunch of social media sites. I have my hands full just running my business.”

Fair enough. One day though you might want to use one of those social media sites for your business. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the name already and not have it occupied by some squatter? (more…)

I have been talking with people a lot lately about the online areas that I’m really interested in following this year, so I decided to share them here, as well. These aren’t necessarily the areas that I think will be the biggest this year. This list is really more about the areas I’m most interested in watching develop. Social Media: Embrace the Community, Don’t Target It

Social media “gurus” tout social media as a great tool to grow any business and increase its connection with its clients. They praise its powerful ability to get your word out and magnify your marketing reach. And it can be all those things, but only if used right. There may be many social media “experts” promising to start a Twitter or Facebook account for businesses, grow their follower base into the tens of thousands and lead them on to increased profits, but it’s not that easy. Social media gurus that focus only on numbers to “get the message out” are treating social media as the next evolution in junk marketing. You know the progression. Junk mail. Telemarketing. Email spam. Now social media spam. Just like the previous direct marketing methods that preceded it, the goal of spamming social media is to count on the numbers to get results. After all, you can spam tens of thousands of people on social media sites for very little money, just like spam emails. If you can get a small percentage of hits, you win, right?

Maybe not. One thing to remember is that people have become more and more upset by these number based marketing communications over the years. Understanding why that is and why social media in particular is a bad place to spam, will better enable you to understand how you should behave yourself as a business or a brand in the social media space.
